Students with an MA admitted to the PhD program may receive a teaching assistantship. The teaching assignment is three courses per year, but in the first year consultant duties in the writing center substitute for one course.
In the first year, the current stipend is $15,000 plus an in-state tuition waver for the two-semester academic year. All new teaching assistants are required to take English 747: Theories and Practices in the Teaching of College English, their first semester. A limited number of tuition waivers are available for out-of-state students. In years two through four, the current stipend is $20,000 (but without an in-state waiver).
A range of fellowships and scholarships are available from the Graduate School and the department. Exceptional applicants may be nominated for these by the Director of Graduate Study on the recommendation of the department’s Graduate Studies Committee. The competition for many of these awards is university-wide, and all of them are highly selective.
