The faculty members of the College Writing Program Committee (Jennifer Whitaker, Matt Carter, Stephen Yarbrough, Nancy Myers, and Risa Applegarth) agreed that Elena and Jay’s portfolios demonstrated their extraordinary skill as teachers. Their syllabi and other materials highlighted their commitment to creating inclusive communities and to transforming students’ self-understanding of their capacities as writers and thinkers. And former students spoke persuasively of the transformative role these teachers have played in their lives.
