UNCG Libraries Research Travel Grant Supports Travel to George Herbert Collection
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Libraries offer one $1750 Research Travel Grant per year to support the work of a researcher who uses the holdings of the Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives.
As home to the George Herbert Society, UNCG is also home to one of the world’s largest collections of Herbert’s books, including all thirteen seventeenth-century editions of The Temple, all first editions of his other printed works, and nearly all editions of his works printed since. This collection, housed in the Hodges Collections and Archives of the Walter Clinton Jackson Library, also includes the Amy Charles Papers, compiled by Professor Amy M. Charles (at UNCG 1956-1986) in preparation for her biography, A Life of George Herbert (Cornell, 1977). UNCG also purchases double copies of all critical monographs about Herbert.

UNCG invites applications for the Research Travel Grant, which is offered on a competitive basis and has a yearly application deadline of April 30, an announcement date of May 15, and which must be used between June 15 of the award year and March 30 of the next year. Graduate students, post-docs, teaching faculty, and independent scholars are all eligible; applicants must live outside of the North Carolina Piedmont area. They also must have a clear research plan, with budget, that involves the on-site use of UNCG’s Special Collections and University Archives.
