Congratulations to PhD students Kathy Goodkin and Catherine Bowlin, recipients of the 2023 Roskelly Award for Pedagogical Innovation!

The College Writing Program Committee (Heather Brook Adams, Gia Coturri-Sorenson, Jennifer Whitaker, and Risa Applegarth) selected these two teachers for recognition from among a deep pool of incredibly talented and thoughtful nominees. Thank you to everyone who shared your innovative teaching with the committee for consideration this year!

Kathy Goodkin’s submission articulated the value of a sustained sequence of writing assignments that invite students to deepen their attention, understanding, and writing capacities by returning to a single project repeatedly, generating significance and success through their sustained work and investment across the semester.

Catherine Bowlin’s submission argued persuasively on behalf of her equity-informed alternative assessment practices, grounded in trust and high expectations for students, through which she promotes students’ risk-taking as writers and their ownership over their learning.
